Hey everyone! And happy Pride! I’m back with another issue of The Heads Up, a weekly newsletter created to keep you in the loop about all that’s happening on The Full Moon Folklorist. In this house, we:
Discuss Black Speculative Fiction

Shout out Black platforms here on Substack that inspire my writing
Meet as many people on Substack and other platforms as humanly possible
But first, here’s some housekeeping items:
I know I’ve not been using the chat feature lately. However, that’s changing. Starting this week, I’ll be posting The Heads-Up newsletter, stories, audios, and anything else that comes up. So stay tuned for that.
THE FULL MOON FOLKLORIST IS OFFICIALLY A BUSINESS!! As you can tell, I’m very excited about this move. Been going back and forth for a while about this, but I did the damn thing. I’m proud of myself. With that being said, there will be some changes to the platform:
Paid subscribers will be the first to have access to the following:
· Longer short stories
· Audio recordings for published works
· Access to collages, songs, and other material that inspired my writing
Free subscribers will have access to the following:
· A sample page of longer short stories
· Public posts
· Flash Fiction stories
By becoming a subscriber, you’ll be helping with:
Getting a website for The Full Moon Folklorist
A microphone for quality audio and video recordings
E-books for longer publications
Quality sound effects and background music for audio recordings
I’ll set up the paid options this week. However, if you’re more comfortable with a one-time payment, Venmo, Paypal, and CashApp will be also be available.
Your support will mean so much to me. Every little bit helps and I’ll most definitely appreciate your and your contribution.
Here’s what’s going on this week:
· To celebrate Juneteenth, I’m releasing a Two-Part short story that’s loosely based on Nottoway Plantation fire that happened on May 15, 2025. So here’s how it’s going to be set up:
Part One will be available on June 19 at 9:00a.m. to everyone.
If you enjoy Part 1, you can become a paid subscriber to gain early access to Part 2 as well as the audio recording.
Book Recommendation of the Week:
Sulwe By Lupita Nyong’o
So far, I’ve been introducing y’all to books geared towards adults and teens. But I’m also hear for Children’s picture books written to empower Black children.
Lupita Nyong’o’s bestselling debut Sulwe is about a young dark-skinned little girl who struggles to see the beauty of her complexion. What comes is a beautiful African folktale about the Sun and Moon.
I highly recommend this story for those who love African folklore. But I also this book enjoyed by adults who’ve struggled (or is currently struggling) with internalized capitalism.
